Chey Tae-won is the Chairman of SK Group. He also serves as Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
He has designated semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI) as the group’s future growth engines and is moving forward with large-scale investments, while at the same time pushing business restructuring (rebalancing) by selling off non-core affiliates.
Attention is focused on the conclusion he will reach regarding the future of SK’s 24.9% treasury shares at the top of the group’s governance structure, in connection with the legislation mandating the cancellation of treasury shares.
He was born on December 3, 1960, in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, as the eldest son of the late Chey Jong-hyun, former Chairman of Sunkyong Group.
He graduated from Shinil High School in Seoul and earned a degree in physics from Korea University. He then studied economics at the University of Chicago in the United States and completed an integrated master’s and doctoral program in economics at the University of Chicago Graduate School.
After joining Sunkyong, he served as Executive Director at Sunkyong America and Managing Director at YUKONG, before being appointed CEO of SK in 1997.
He serves as CEO of SK Innovation and SK Hynix.
He has served as Vice Chairman of the Federation of Korean Industries, President of the Korea Handball Federation, and Chairman of the Board of the Social Value Institute.
He has a solid build and enjoys sports.
He is currently engaged in divorce and property division litigation with his wife, Roh Soh-young, Director of Art Center Nabi.
